06:29 am - train crash releases chlorine gas... http://www.augustachronicle.com/stories/010605/lat_train.shtml
There was a train crash here in Graniteville, SC (a little town I pass through every day on my way to work) that spilled chlorine gas into the area. Details are in the article. Basically, they avacuated the area, enforced a curfew, several people have died. The hospitals were swamped with patients experiencing symptoms. They had to set up a decontamination unit and shelters. Really scary stuff. The only two ways I used to know how to get to work were completely blocked off by cops. US 1 (Aiken-Augusta Hwy) was closed for cripes sake! I ended up having to go I-20 way out of the way and around just to get to Aiken. The governor declared a state of emergency in SC. I heard when he flew over the area (which is now a no-fly zone) there were lots of dead animals, etc... Before they brought in all the extra cops to evacuate the Graniteville residents, they had them stay in their homes with the doors and windows shut and the ventilation systems off. How scary would that be? Stuck in your own house, dangerous gas slowly leaking out of a huge train, and you having no idea whats going to happen to you or your family? The actual crossing where the crash happened is one that I go trough every morning. This is the second rtain crash there involving a fatality in two months. Its the third fatal crash at that intersection in less than 6 months. (The older crash happened between a train and a car). Something needs to be done about it. There is a large mill and an elementary school in that same block or so of area making traffic a nightmare in the morning hours. At least the crash happened way in the morning before too many workers or kids were affected. It could've easily been much much worse.
